About the Adventure on Two Wheels

On the 15th of April I will be riding my Triumph Scrambler, customized by Quality Bike, to Efroud Morocco. From there I will take a transfer to Midelt to start the Titan Desert by Garmin 2014. I have endeavored to take on Morocco like never before on two wheels, descending from Gibraltar to the Sahara on as little asphalt as possible, completing the six stages of the Titan and then heading back to Barcelona. This would never have been possible without the help of my friends at Quality Bike Barcelona. Please keep posted to hear more about the customization of the Moto and my own physical preparations. This will be a great adventure for me and a fun, interactive one for those who follow from home...

End of Adventure

Hi All,

I have bad news, I am back in Barcelona.  After my crash my foot continued to worsen and the pain became greater.  I made it to the race check in and had a visit with the race doctors, who are from Barcelona.  They essentially disqualified me from starting and said that I need to return home for MRI, x-ray, etc.

I either have a stress fracture or a torn ligament, we shall see.

From Middelt, where I did not have proper internet to update, I rode straight to Nador, caught the overnight ferry to Almería and then drove the endless 800 kilometers yesterday to Barcelona.

I am very upset about this injury and watching the race start was very disappointing.  If there is one lesson to take from this, don't ride too hard off road with hard panniers, they will break your foot or ankle.  Soft luggage is the way to go for sure, even if it can be more easily stolen.

Anyway, I spent a marvelous two weeks seeing Spain and Morocco by motorbike on either secondary or dirt roads and learned a lot about how to travel in that fashion.  I also proved that you can tackle the tough Moroccan roads and pietas with a Triumph Scrambler, no need for a BMW GS or a KTM.  I did not see a single other Scrambler, though as the going is harder on one. I am going to organize my photos today and will post the best ones I have tonight.

Best to all,

Walid

Jerez to Chefchaoun

Hi all.

Yesterday was one of the greatest days in my motorcycling life, what an adventure. It began in Jerez, slightly hungover from Sherry, searching everywhere for energizer aaa lithium non rechargeable batteries. The ONLY ones my spot device will take. Then a mad dash to the ferry which I caught just in time.  There was one other biker on the boat and we quickly became friends, an Italian named max riding a well equipped gs1200. We decided to tackle the trip from Ceuta to Chaoun together as our aims to ride off road are the same, though he is a superior rider for sure. But we had a problem...  It turns out that in 2007 Colleen and I rented a car from Ceuta, went to morocco and upon the return forgot to return the exit papers. The customs agent, no joke, gave me the matriculation of the rental car from 2007 and asked me to produce proof of its existence outside morocco. Needless to say I got in the old fashioned way, with a rather expensive handshake and one fat ugly guy screaming at me in Arabic. Nightmare.

The drive south took us along the beautiful coast and then into the mountains.  It was, hands down, the most beautiful ride of my life. Until the police stopped us for doing 100 in a 60.  This one I talked my way out because there aren't too many blue eyed Arabs. Max had to buy me a beer, though I owed him one already for watching all my stuff as the customs agent tried to ruin my trip!!

For the final 10 ks we decided to take a track on the gps off-road and arrive to the town from above. This turned out to be a goat path and I have to give credit to the guys at quality bike for the work the did. At one point my whole bike was sitting on the guarda carter!!  We were forced to turn back, but I will upload a video of the event.

We are off now to explore the area, cross a river, and enjoy the area.

More to come soon

Walid.

Day 4 and more to come

Hello all,

Today begins day 4 of my voyage south. The first three days were consumed with learning process of travel alone by motorcycle. I have done very little so far in comparison with many trips, but as it is my first, the learning curve has been steep. Firstly, I overpacked despite all warnings and several attempts at losing stuff. I even left a whole bag at the first hotel. I also assumed that I would use more tech stuff but I have been bogged down by several factors. Firstly one has to deal with handling the bike, the weather and route finding. As I am not on highways and am often on dirt roads, playing with gadgets like a gopro is tough. Also gloves make touch screens a pain. The next hurdle of being alone is that I have no one to watch my stuff when I need to make a pit stop. If I can say anything about motorcycle travel it is that less is more and reliance on the internet in remote spots is not a good idea.

All that being said this has proven to be an amazing start. It is equal parts scary, exhilarating, lonely, mind blowing, and a challenge. I am glad I have had Spain to negociate prior to getting to Morocco. Taking my time descending through catalunya, Aragon, and castella La Mancha has been amazing. The photos speak for themselves!

I will definitely be leaving some stuff behind with a friend in Jerez before crossing the straights.

When I arrive in cordoba tonight I will have access to a real computer and will update about the details, the bike and what's to come...  I did not expect to be so disconnected on the route I chose, 3G and Internet have been terrible. Also, of all things to leave behind I chose the Bluetooth keyboard for my iPad. I think I have equal weight in extra socks!!

More soon.

All the best
